John Hall Thorpe (1874–1947) was an Australian artist who learned colour woodblock printing in Sydney before moving to London in 1902. He studied at Heatherley’s School of Art and held his first solo exhibition in 1918, which was an immediate success. A leading member of the Colour Woodcut Society, Thorpe created hand-printed works designed to bring vivid, decorative colour into homes, achieving international acclaim during the 1920s and 1930s.
