Flora McLachlan studied at Brighton College and then attended Oxford University to study English from 1994 to 1997. She returned to art and, in 1999, earned a Professional Development Diploma in Illustration from West Herts College in Watford. In January 2008, she was elected as an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
