Ethel Spowers

Ethel Louise Spowers (1890–1947) was an Australian artist who studied under Claude Flight at London’s Grosvenor School of Modern Art in 1929. Her modernist linocuts gained recognition in the 1930s, were exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, and were acquired by the British Museum and the V&A. On returning to Australia, she championed modernism and linocut printing, becoming a founding member of George Bell’s Contemporary Group.
