Gilbert Spencer

Gilbert Spencer (1892–1979) was a British painter, draughtsman, teacher and writer, born in Cookham, Berkshire, and younger brother of Stanley Spencer. Trained at Camberwell, the Royal College of Art, and the Slade under Fred Brown and Henry Tonks, his studies were interrupted by wartime service. Elected RA in 1960, he gained distinction for lyrical landscapes of southern England and for the Holywell Manor murals.
